I once had a job that I did not like. It got so bad that going to work made me sick to my stomach. Many times the night before would find me taking sedatives to calm my nervous jitters. It took a year and a half before I finally left the job. At my next job (17 years) I felt so calm and relaxed that I swore I would never put myself through that again. Life is way too short to be miserable at your work.
Let's analyze why a job can go bad. Maybe your boss or coworkers are impossible to work with. Perhaps the company is very unorganized and things can't get done. Harassment of any kind makes for a stressful atmosphere. Or it could be the work itself is excessive to the extreme and it is a challenge to keep up.
There are many reasons why a job can be horrible. The good news is you learn more from unpleasant situations than those that are easy. Here are 5 simple steps to take should you find yourself in an unhappy situation:
- Analyze why you took the job in the first place and identify the clues ignored that might have revealed the outcome in advance? Sometimes in our enthusiasm for a job, we miss what is glaring us in the face.
- Never be a victim. Why do these problems exist and what is your part in the cause?
- What can you do to make it better? Come up with an action plan.
- Implement your plan. If it doesn't work change your strategies.
- If everything you have tried is of no avail, maybe it's time to move on. Brush up your resume and being sending it out. Never bad mouth the company you are leaving and figure out a way to exit gracefully. Protecting your reputation is of key importance.
Always remember that adversity is an opportunity in disguise.
