Goal setting is a very effective way to achieve the success you want in your life. You set a goal to lose 20 lbs in 3 months, or to save $1,000 in a year, or maybe to buy a new house by 2012. These are great goals. You have something you want to do. You quantify it and you have a date by when you want to have it happen. But, what happens if you do not achieve it. What if you keep making the same New Years resolution on January 1st but you get no where close to accomplishing it? In my case every year a I made a New Years resolution to learn French. And every year I came no where near learning French. Finally I realized that this goal was not so important to me so I dropped it from the list. Maybe later in life I may pick it up again. But, there are goals that I know I must achieve. For example losing weight. This I must do for my health so I cannot drop it. However I am not even close to losing the weight I want. What is the solution?
It is very important to set goals and achieve them. By not achieving them you tell your brain that you are less capable. It tells your brain that you do not honor yourself and your commitments to yourself and that you are not important. If you promised your child you would take them to the playground on Saturday, you would absolutely keep this promise. Why than would you do any less for yourself? By keeping your promises to yourself you honor yourself and send your brain the right message. This is a life skill that you must learn.
